We asked Operations Manager Stan to bust some common misconceptions about car maintenance and provide accurate information to help vehicle owners make informed decisions. Here is what he came up with!
Myth – Tires should be replaced at the lowest depth so you get the most out of your tires.
Truth – If you wait until 2/32 or less when your tires are at the lowest depth, could put you at risk. At this depth most of the sipes are worn out and you will not get as much grip in wet weather or even the best traction at this point. it is best to change at 4/32 since the tire would still have some sipes and has minimum grip.
Myth – You have to service your car at the dealership or it voids your warranty.
Truth – Your vehicle is under warranty as long as you follow the guidelines in your service manual. You are able to service your vehicle wherever you like and the Magnuson-Moss warranty act is your defense to do so.
Myth- Your check engine light is on and the code in the system will tell you exactly what’s wrong.
Truth- The code that comes up when the technician scans it does not tell you exactly what is wrong with your vehicle. The code in the system will give you at best an idea to the system currently malfunctioning. For example, a p0175 code means the vehicle is running rich – this does not mean that the fuel system is the problem or that the fuel in the vehicle is the problem. That code is letting you know that something has malfunctioned and it is causing your vehicle to get too much fuel – multiple parts could be the problem.
